Neighbors helping neighbors: what’s new at the Newberry Country Food Project

Green bags, local shelves

Live Well La Pine launched the Newberry Country Food Project this year. The idea is simple. Take a green bag. Each time you shop, add a can, a box of cereal, or a bag of rice. Every other month, those bags are collected and stay right here in South Deschutes and North Klamath Counties.

Four collections so far in 2026:

  • February 26 — 47 bags, 614 lbs, to La Pine Community Kitchen
  • April 23 — 63 bags, 1,098 lbs of food and 11 lbs of hygiene items, to St. Vincent de Paul of La Pine
  • June 25 — 143 bags, 2,149 lbs of food and 158 lbs of hygiene items. Food went to the La Pine Community Kitchen extension pantry at Gilchrist School. Hygiene stayed at the Kitchen.
  • August — 33 bags, 602 lbs of food and 17 lbs of hygiene items

Year to date: 286 bags, 4,463 pounds of food, and 186 pounds of hygiene items.

Thank you to High Lakes Christian Church, the Little Deschutes Grange, La Pine High School, La Pine Community Health Center, St. Vincent de Paul, Oregon Department of Human Services, the High Lakes Car Club, and many smaller groups made those numbers.
